The mix we use is Boon's recipe which is 1 part double red line brand akadama, 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, a splash of crushed granite and horticultural charcoal. This mix offers perfect drainage plus some particles hold moisture and fertilizer. Bare root trees, or any bonsai in training, will put on incredible roots in this mix. We generally will let our bonsai grow in this mix and our training flat for a couple years before more root pruning but if you have a very healthy tree that has put on a lot of growth in one year you could repot sooner.
