Foxtail Barley, Hordeum jubatum, is a native perennial grass. Another common name is Squirrel Tail Grass which describes the look of the white to pink colored plume. The leaf blades are 4 inches long and ¼ inch wide and are pale bluish green in color. It prefers full sun to partial shade, and it is very tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions. It can grow in wet, soggy soil or dry, gritty soil. It is often found growing on the edges of marshes and wetlands. It reaches 20 inches in height. Start the seed indoors 4 - 6 weeks before the last expected frost date in the spring. Cover with 1/8 inch of soil and keep the seed moist. With a temperature of 70F, germination usually occurs in 14 days. Transplant outdoors and space 18 inches apart.
